Abstract

The development of students’ foreign language communicative competence has become a significant priority of contemporary higher education. Increasing academic mobility, international cooperation, digital communication and professional interaction require university graduates to use a foreign language not only accurately but also appropriately, independently and purposefully in authentic situations. This article examines modern pedagogical approaches to developing foreign language communicative competence among university students. Particular attention is given to communicative, competence-based, learner-centered, task-based and technology-enhanced approaches. The study analyzes the relationship between linguistic knowledge, communicative performance, intercultural awareness, learner autonomy and assessment. The article also considers the pedagogical potential of digital resources and artificial intelligence as supplementary instruments for language practice. On the basis of theoretical analysis, a practical framework is proposed in which language input, meaningful interaction, professional tasks, independent learning and formative assessment are integrated into a coherent instructional process. The findings suggest that communicative competence develops most effectively when students are provided with regular opportunities to use language for meaningful academic and professional purposes, receive constructive feedback, and reflect on their own progress.
